MENA first, but not only! The EU, Germany and Poland in the face of global migration issues

Blog

Although the number of refugees and migrants entering Europe has recently fallen, our continent remains one of the most attractive destinations for global migration. Europe needs new and common solutions in this matter.

We invite you to read the new texts published as part of the German-Polish European Blog. We asked Wojciech Wilk, UN expert and president of the Polish Center for International Aid Foundation (PCPM) for the perspective from Poland. A German look this time presents Vera Hanewinkel from the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at the University of Osnabrück.

Despite the fact that the influx of migrants to Europe has decreased (comparing especially to 2015), this problem will continue to have a strong impact on European policy. The Dublin system has proved inefficient and appealing to solidarity between member states is unreliable. The authors point to the need for comprehensive solutions, a new migration policy that also corresponds to the needs of an aging European society and to maintain economic development through the legal employment of migrants.
